Submitting UK Tax Returns Online
To submit a self assessment online individuals will need to register for an account with the Government Gateway, the central registration service for online government services. Once registered for online filing they will be provided with a username and password and be sent through the post, to their home address, an activation code ensuring that only they have access.
There are a number of advantages to online filing and calculating your self assessment tax online. These include the speed with which the return is processed and refunds issued, that the tax liability is calculated automatically and that the deadline is 31st January rather than the 31st October.
To register fro online filing individuals will need the following:
Their Unique Tax Reference (UTR) - a ten digit number printed at the top the self-assessment form and on other correspondence relating to tax returns
Their National Insurance number or Their Post Code
Once the account has been activated the return can be filed online following the simple step-by-step instructions provided by HM Revenue & Customs.
